I went to the Oregon Coast this weekend to do some surfing with my friend Paul and his son Tyler. Stayed in my beach house in Manzanita. First of all, let me get the most important aspect out of the way–Paul got thrown out of the Sand Dune Tavern in Manzanita. Unbelievable. I’ve been drunk and disorderly in that place many, many times, and never got frogmarched out, but Paul wasn’t in there more than twenty minutes and got his ASS TOSSED. Wow, I’m having fun with this. It was GREAT.
As far as the surf goes, it sucked swampwater. Our friend Mike Ehlen made it worse by telling us how the last thirty days have been the best he’s seen in many years. Mike lives in Manzanita and knows exactly where the best spots are for every angle of swell and point of wind, but even he said we were unlikely to find a rideable wave this weekend. Ah, well. At least I got to see Paul get tossed out of the FRICKIN’ SAND DUNE, where you could have sex with a goat and never raise an eyebrow.
TOSSED.
OUT.
I also got some shots of the guys trying out Stand Up in Nahalem Bay (flat water, sort of), and I did some video of my graceful footwork trying out the new camera and board mount. I made the mount out of aluminum and welded it all up. Nice to have a lathe and a MIG with a spoolgun for thise little knock-together jobs. Now I need to find some way to justify the slick new plasma cutter Miller has that’s about the size of a lunchox but will make pencil line cuts in 3/8″ steel. I NEED one of those. I guess I’ll give it to myself as a Veterans day present. I’ll post the video after I get a chance to edit it, but here’s a few shots.
Hmmm. Shorebreak seems a little heavy
Not getting any better as the day wears on
So we wound up in the bay, letting the longboarders try my SUP. Not elegant paddlework, but he’s up
BTW, Happy Veterans day to all of you other vets out there. USN, six years, USS Enterprise CVAN-65. Nuclear Reactor Operator, Gulf of Tonkin, Indian Ocean (Bangaladesh) and all that stuff. Seems like a thousand years ago.

I’m glad you’re back at it – love to read the updates from both Maui and Oregon. Keep ‘em coming! By the way- what’d he do?
Thanks. He didn’t really do anything all that dramatic, just irritated some locals by being in the way when they wanted to shoot pool. They made a snotty remark, he made a snotty remark, etc., etc.. Any wise bartender knows who to pitch when a tourist argues with a local.
