Artwork for “Save the Children” paddle

I’ll be auctioning off this paddle sometime in the next couple of weeks for a charity event at the lumberjocks.com website.

I still need to epoxy and varnish the blade. Should be done this week. I’ll post it here and on a number of other forums when it’s all ready.

The paddle that the artwork has been added to is one on the left.

Pyrographic artwork….humpback cow and calf.

This paddle is meant to be mounted on the wall and will come with mahogany brackets for wall mounting. While it can and has been paddled it’s too heavy for everyday use IMO.

Very cool, I might have to bid on that and reunite your original pair. I know what pyrographic means, but how did you do that. I did woodburning when I was a kid and it was a bit lower resolution. Like outlining Howdy Doodie’s face. The freckles were a challenge

I was surprised how easy it was. I did the pencil sketch 1st. I looked at a bunch of photos and sketched from a couple. I borrowed a nice woodburner from a friend of Jacqui’s. Adjustable heat, lots of tips, nice tool. I told Sue I want one for Christmas.

I practiced a little on some scrap and then went for it….slowly… can’t erase mistakes very easily if at all.

Feel free to bid. But you are already getting another one. I have the shaft for your’s glued up on the frame as I type. This one you’ll want to paddle with …hopefully. I’m playing with blade dynamics on this next round. I’ll be doing some kind of artwork on all of them from now on too. Definitely sets them apart. I have an idea for your’s but that’s secret.

I’m making 4 at once. The cedar laminated design for you, Sue, me, and a different old/new design. I was surprised to see something very similar being done already. Look at the one that looks like a big lake canoe paddle on Evan’s blog. Should be very easy to make compared to the bent laminations..

Shaw & Tenney are in Orono, Maine. Each paddle is a single piece of wood. Cut on a bandsaw and shaped on a huge drum sander. It will be interesting to see how well the shafts hold up to the extra stress the leverage of a long shaft gives. I think weight will be an issue given the woods they are showing. Standing and swinging a long paddle around is a lot more tiring than sitting and using a shorter one.

I’m thinking of a long thick blade (very bouyant, think crutch) that might be of help with balance on my bad days. I’d like something that can be leaned on a little more. I think it could be useful but maybe I should just stay out of the water on those days…..nah…screw it….that’s when I need to be out there the most. We’ll see how it works.

I’m eventually going to make a paddle for everyone. Not SUP paddles but Diane, Carol and Dave could all use a nice canoe paddle. Not sure if Di would ever use one but I thought one for the wall with a scene of one of the Cape lighthouses would be cool. Carol and Dave both have canoe’s.
