Ponohouse is about playing in Maui. The articles about things that I’m doing while I’m here are in the form of posts–the common daily element of blogs. Things that are more permanent like restaurant reviews are saved as Pages, and are listed in the Page section.

Hi Bill,
A past client of mine, Jordan Lev, just shared he will be working with Babcock & Jenkins. Jordan is a really talented guy.
I wanted to know a bit more about your company so I searched, read, then found the ponohouse.
Small world. My step-father owns http://www.MauiLodging.com and my cousin http://www.ExtendedHorizons.com
Maui and Portland are such magical places.
Thanks for your RSS article. I’ve just started designing my blog out of WP at http://www.MindfulnessMaverick.com and I’m learning a lot about this amazing blog world.

A small world indeed, I recently contacted your cousin about diving with him, but I’ve been so busy with other toys that I haven’t gotten my scuba gear wet in the last two months.
Wordpress is pretty interesting software, and blogging is remarkable. I’m learning new things every day.

Hello Bill,
I came upon your website while researching Maui on the web. I have a strange request: I am looking for Filipino contacts on Maui. I can elaborate more on that if you contact me via email.
Thank you! Beautiful house!!!
Anne
Hi, Came across your page… my husband and I are looking for a place to stay this summer in Maui for about a week…. although your place looks so lovely, I’m not too sure we can afford it…..what is the price? I was also wondering if you could share info. on other great places to stay that are clean and pretty reasonable in price that are near great beaches to swim and people watch. We have been to Oahu but this will be our first time in Maui.
Thanks so much,
Chris & Brandi

Hi Bill,
I came across your site because of my new interest in sup. I lived on Maui all through the 80s. Jimmy and I shared a shop at the cannery in Haiku making boards. I am working on paddles and live in the Gorge now. I make custom snowboards for racers World Cup guys. Google Mike Tinkler snowboards and check out some of my latest stuff . When you are in Portland I should get you on a paddle. Will trade for some advice.
Mike Tinkler.
Hi Bill,
Just looked at your Babcock&Jenkins site .Make that a tiny bit of advice Ha! Ha!.
Mike Tinkler.
Hey Mike,
I suspect you’re the Mike Tinkler that did Tinkler Tails. I sailed a few of those boards back in the 80’s. It would be great to get together. I won’t be back in Portland until the fall. I’m racing my vintage car at most of the classic tracks in North America. I’m in Pittsburgh this week racing at BeaveRun and the the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. I have a blog for this other passion at http://www.allaluminumtour.com
I should also hook you up with Lane Mead. He’s the caretaker at my house in Maui and he’s working on some paddle designs. He did some pretty cool Carbon fiber kayak paddles back about ten years ago, and now he’s looking at the Stand Up Market.
I’d be glad to help you with any advice you need, I’m not working at B&J on a regular basis anymore–they’re doing a lot better without me. Mostly I surf, windsurf, SUP, and race cars.
Its rough, but somebody has to do it.
Awesome blog! Lots of great information- I’ve put together my own blog at http://www.paddlesurf.net for those interested in paddling Baja and for just what’s happening in SUP here in San Diego.
I’ve got some good photos of some interesting boards (all carbon fiber quads, 9′6″ rip sticks etc) that I’m going to post soon as well as some local surf photos and info (Sunset Cliffs, Sloughs etc) and some “inside the shaping bay” photos. and info.
Looking forward to your next update- let me know if you ever come through San Diego- I’ll take you out to the Cliffs.
Ash
I just love a cool classic car like a convertible Cutlass. I see them all the time in movies and TV now.
Hi Bill,
My wife and I live in L.A and have rented your house for a vacation this month through http://mauisports.com.
My parents and sister who live in Australia and will be joining us there so the size and space will be superb.
The house looks amazing and this site will be a great resource for us. Can’t wait to arrive on Maui.
Thanks & All the Best.
Matt
Bill,
Found your site by accident when i am supposed to be working. Very nice. I live in Florida. I am 53, surfed for 40 years. My shoulders might be almost as bad as yours. I ride longboards now. (I bought a 12′ Surftech Micky Munoz a few years ago with the idea of doing SUP, but never bought a paddle.) I am not to retirement yet, but am starting to look for a nice, warm, tropical location with fairly consistent, clean, head high waves to do essentially what you are doing-having fun in the water. Does Maui have summer surf, May-September? How would you suggest going about trying to find a reasonable 3-4 month rental on Maui?
Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, glad you found the site useful.
Maui does indeed have good summer surf–on the south shore. Not huge, but nice and consistent.
Rentals are not easy, nor are they generally inexpensive. There’s plenty of condos, I expect some of them probably rent for longer time periods at a discount.
Thanks. I’m not into huge. At my age I like it fun. My 30th wedding anniversary is comming up next June. A fine reason for a surf trip.
Thanks again.
Bill,
You are an inspiration! I stumbled onto your site when I was researching stand-up paddle surfing and I can’t stop checking it out.
I’m from Seattle and live minutes from the water. I went on many WA/OR surf adventures when I was a teen and now that I have kids/responsibilities I don’t have a lot of time. However, since you don’t necessarily need waves I can go down the street and throw my board in and work the muscles that I’ll need when I do eventually find my way to surf. So, this brings me to my question… I saw your board comparison, awesome by the way, and I just wanted to get your final thoughts on a good board that will mostly be used for paddling in open water and not surfing. Thanks for your time.
The starboard 12′6″ is a great cruising board, I’m using one now to paddle in flatwater like the Willamette river. I’m amazed at the momentum this board has–one stroke and you go twenty yards.
Hi Bill,
I am Matt’s (No 10 above) dad, and we have just returned from a great week at Pono House. What a great house and location. The neighbours were real interested in who we were. It was a perfect place to meet, Matt, Suji & Murray (our grandson) from LA and Robin, Jayne & me from Melbourne. There was heaps to do, including No 1 on the list – nothing!
Thank you for the opportunity. It was an experience of a lifetime – and I’m 63!
Cam Bennett (Melbourne, Australia)
Glad you had a good time Cam, it’s a pretty special place.
Aloha,
Interesting story. I was looking online for a different Bill Babcock and stumbled across your LinkedIn profile. After reading, I was compelled to say thank you. Just that little bit of history was inspiring to me and a pleasure to read. You may be “nearly completely incompetent at managing people” but your wit and style more than compensate. With my ultimate goal of being a beach bum I think I can learn a lot from you so my subscription is in. Be well and enjoy!
Guy
Great stand up site. Can we get a link to http://www.kialoa.com? Thanks.
Sam
Bill,
I’m the editor of 1859 Oregon’s Magazine, a 30K circulation sold throughout the Northwest. A friend of mine told me about your site and that you’re a Portland/Maui jumper. We’re working on an article on SUP for our summer issue. Gerry Lopez, a fellow Bendite, and Karen Wrenn of Catalina SUP grit, just did a shoot with us at Pacific City for the piece. I’d like to chat with you about some of the fundamentals of the sport.
